NZICT welcomes Hong Kong free trade agreement

November 13, 2009

The Group that represents ICT vendors, NZICT, has today welcomed news that New Zealand has signed a free trade agreement with Hong Kong.

Negotiated at the APEC meeting in Singapore today, the agreement signals a great opportunity for New Zealand ICT companies to expand into the Hong Kong services sector.

The agreement is not likely to be signed and ratified until next year, but New Zealand ICT companies are encouraged by the move.

NZICT CEO Brett O’Riley says that New Zealand software companies have a range of applications that are well suited to the Hong Kong digital economy.

“There are already encouraging signs that there are significant export opportunities for New Zealand ICT companies.”

Hong Kong is an important export market for New Zealand. Exports are currently valued around $800 million. With a free trade agreement in place with Hong Kong, New Zealand ICT companies will be well placed to contribute substantially to the growth of New Zealand exports.

Ends.
