Programming team selected to Represent New Zealand

The New Zealand Olympiad in Informatics (NZOI) has just announced the composition of the New Zealand team to travel to the International Olympiad in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

The team will include Jamie McCloskey of Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti, Christchurch, Boris Pfahringer of Hamilton Boys High School, Melby Ruarus of Wellington High School and Simon Welsh, a student at Scots College, Wellington. This programming contest is held annually for the top young computer scientists in the world with approximately 85 countries participating.

The selection process, which is overseen by the New Zealand Olympiad in Informatics, has taken place over a four month period.  Following an intensive week-long training program in January, contenders competed in four distinct contests. The first two were run by the NZOI and the other two, the “French-Australian Regional Informatics Olympiad” (FARIO) and the “Australian Invitational Informatics Olympiad” (AIIO),  were hosted by the Australian Informatics Organisation.  Our students performed well in these contests with 2 New Zealanders in the top 10 in the FARIO competition and gaining 2 silver medals and a bronze in the AIIO.

ACE Training, Solnet, The University of Auckland and Datacom have all made generous contributions towards the cost of competing in this event.

This is the fourth year that New Zealand is sending a team to the IOI. The competition consists of two, five-hour programming competitions. New Zealand got its first taste of success last year when Ronal Chan from Auckland won a silver medal.
